Cons - Affirmative Action
When schools and employers look for a candidate, they try and choose those with the best credentials while fitting the team dynamic that is already in place. The general public, knowing the competition they face, work harder to improve themselves through gaining more knowledge and honing their skills more in order to fit those criteria organizations require.
Although everyone works to improve themselves, with Affirmative Action set in place, those applying to the position may not even have a chance to set their foot in. With quotas that must be upheld by the organization, those who are considered to be more well off than others could have a disadvantage compared to those who are considered to be on the lower tier. An applicant might be chosen over the other due to the different race they are categorized.
With Affirmative Action in effect, it does question whether those who were accepted with the condition of Affirmative Action really deserved such position or that the facility was required to accept them to the position. With such a condition in place, those individuals could really feel like they cannot accomplish tasks without the help of someone. An individual who may have higher credentials and skills might be turned down for another person, who may have moderate level skills, all due to him belonging in a different group.
With such a law placed, it really does question whether racism will truly ever be diminished because even the federal government is emphasizing trying to even the playing field of the different races by emphasizing more on choosing certain races over the other. Through this, though there are many civil groups emphasizing stopping racism, the United States will never truly be “color-blind” until laws like this are taken out and those that aid minority groups are also taken out.
